When I arrived 15 minutes before the start of a fly-tying workshop we were leading in collaboration with Downeast Salmon Federation at Fogtown Brewing Company in Ellsworth to begin setting up vises and prepping tying materials, I was surprised by a jovial patron who exclaimed “you better get set up quickly because people are ready to get started!”
“Can we do science today?!” asked one especially inquisitive student as I stepped into the after school session at the Peninsula School in Prospect Harbor to gather up my group. Lucky for him, science was at the core of what we were doing that day and every other day during this after school series.
From late July through August 2016, MOS staff partnered with Mano en Mano of Milbridge to facilitate some staff teambuilding and professional development, a series of four field trips, and daily outdoor programs which served as a curriculum-tied alternative to what had been physical education in past years. We called this new physical education block “Outdoor Explorations.”
